Rootikal – Michael Prophet

Michael Prophet had the crowd singing along and thrilled as he sang numerous songs from his catalogue.

Michael George Haynes, born 1957 in Kingston, Jamaica, known for his ‘crying’ tenor vocals, started his recording around the age of 20. In 1977, his debuting single “Praise You Jah Jah”, written five years earlier, was the album recorded by producer, Yabby You.


Michael Prophet as he was later called, has cited Bob Andy as his major influence and motivation as a singer, released his first Jamaican hit with ‘Fight it to the Top’, originally recorded by The Heptones. Island Records, the the UK, released his 1980 recordings “Serious Reasoning” album, which established his success worldwide, instead of solely in his home country of Jamaica.
