Rootikal – Michael Prophet

On Sunday 1st of May Rootikal hosted a very special dance with the legendary roots vocalist Michael Prophet.

Any fan of conscious reggae music will be aware of the great songs that Michael Prophet has given the world over the past four decades. From his early classics with Yabby U like ‘Mash Down Rome’, through to early roots dancehall with Junjo Lawes (‘Evil Doers’) and later digi killers ‘Hypocrites’ with Daddy Freedy and ‘Giddy Up’ with King Tubbys the man has delivered truly great music. We’re naturally honoured to be able to welcome Michael Prophet to Rootikal.

Guest selectors were Russ Brown of Disciples and Boom Shacka Lacka sound system fame and Rootikal friend and regular Ashley Beedle. Russ has been central to the UK roots reggae scene for over twenty years now, first coming to attention through a series of dub albums that he and his brother Lol produced for Jah Shaka in the late 80s. The list of artists that he’s since worked with reads like a roll call of reggae greats and includes Sister Rasheda, Prince Allah, Mykal Rose plus many of the best UK vocalists. Suffice it to say, Russ’s knowledge is deep – enough said.

Since running with Shock sound system in the 80s Ashley has DJed and produced extensively and has worked with Horace Andy and Junior Delgado, amongst many others. As anyone who checks the Rootikal radio shows will be aware, the man knows his music – and we’re glad to have him back.

The Rootikal crew of David Hill, Stuart Patterson and Mr Faso will also be spinning, aided by the one they call Prince Terralox.
